The Disappearing Face

At about five years old, his face was somewhat oblong. His skin was the color of milk chocolate and looked just as smooth. He had a beauty mark just under his left eye close to his cheekbone and no bigger than an eraser tip. The beauty mark was one of the most striking things about his face. It was a mark all his own, making him stand out and slowly building his character. His eyebrows were full, completing a perfect frame for his face. His eyes were a deep brown, big and round like marbles, full of life. His nose was slightly wide and perfect for this face. His cheekbones were full, but still high on his face, something women long for these days and will often try to mimic with makeup. His lips were perfect, slightly thinner on the top and a little thicker on the bottom. God could not have done any better.

As he entered his teenage and young adult years, his face appeared slightly more round, maybe because of his growing afro. Once he became this elongated figure, his cheekbones were slathered with acne that was inevitable in his teenage years. Everything else remained virtually the same on what was one of the most beautiful faces in the world to many, many people ... young girls and boys and their parents. Everyone loved him.

When he became an adult -- somewhere around his late twenties -- his face started to change drastically. The nose was no longer wide. The skin got lighter. The beauty mark, his character, faded into the background.

As the years progressed, the nose was barely present; one would struggle to see the nostrils. The lips were much thinner—the top and the bottom. The chin suddenly had a dimple in it. The cheekbones were higher and more pronounced. The eyes were still big and brown, but they didn't seem to have much life in them. The skin was no longer the color of milk chocolate; it wasn’t even the color of caramel. His skin became colorless, like milk, not even buttermilk. His 5-year-old face and his young adult face disappeared before our very eyes. He was so much more beautiful in his original skin, original lips, original nose. It makes me smile to think about what he would have looked like and how his life would have been different had he kept his original self, his character.
